Is anyone using Topamax for SM & Migraines

Postby Irene Blacklock » Wed Feb 02, 2011 6:37 pm

Hi
I have SM, c2 to c6, but I also have migraines (since childhood). I get the tightness in my shoulders that goes up in my neck and frequently leads to a migrain. I take 50mg Topamax at night and 25mg in the morning for migraines. It has actually helped in the frequency of the tingling I get from the sm. I also take Amitriptyline for the migraines and shoulder stuff. Does anyone else use these and do they help? Does sm trigger your migraines?

After going to an ASAP conference a few years back, I realize that I have what would be considered a mild case. I get tingling or pins and needle feeling down one side of my body and then it switches to the other side of the body which is quite uncomfortable but I wouldn't call it really painful. The only place that I get any real pain, other than migraines, is at my waist, and it's at about a 3 or 4 level pain now. And it's weird, it only hurts at my waist, although a few times it has hurt where my legs join my torso (not as much though). It's upped it'self this past year from a level two. I get other symptoms but they are typical MS symptoms,( parts going numb, tightning around my chest, double vision, loss of feeling) except I have no lesions in my brain and I do have a syrinx. My wonderful neurologist has been diagnosed with cancer so I am starting all over again with a doctor at San Diego State University. She's actuallly an MS specialist. So I thought I'd checkwith you before I spoke to her again.

Anyway, I really wanted to know if migraines and sm seem to affect many of you, and if they do, what helps?

Thanks,
Irene

Hi Irene,

I used Topomax when I was first diagnosed for about 7 months. It did not work well for me. The triptyline worked okay but caused a weight gain I was not happy with. I do not have SM, but I do suffer from Complex Migraine and have 9mm CM herniation. The tightness in the shoulder also happens to me with CM. I get burning in between my shoulder blades and down to both wrists sometimes.

I do not have SM and have been tested for MS, which was negative. Occasionally I get numbness in my groin area and in my hands (I also do not have carpal tunnel). Sometimes my fingers twitch and I cannot control them.

Since July of 2009 I have been on a vitamin regimen that consists of Co-Q-10 enzyme and vitamin B2. I was not a strong believer in natural remedies but I really didn't want to start fooling around with prescription drugs either. One of my NL's is a pain management specialist. He prepared a whole list of things for me to try but the first combination he gave me works. Magnesium is also on the list of migraine treatments but causes dehydration and so on.

I have a recurring steroid prescription that I refill two or three times per year when I have an "episode" three day long headache with nervous symptoms.

Good luck, hope you find the answers you need and some relief that works well for you.

Thank you for your reply. I found that the amytriptyline made me hungry all the time and cut it back by half. I can get rid of a migraine with imitrex etc. once I get it but I think 9 or 10 migraines a month is excessive since I'm on Topomax. I was down to only 3-4 migraines and then the last 4-5 months it has jumped to 9-10 and the tightness in my shoulders and neck has increased. I even bought magnesium lotion for my back as it was suggested by someone for the back tightness. I take magnesium capsules also. Supposedly the back tightness is a symptom of cm and I think it's the trigger for my headaches now, however, it could be just a coincidence. Thanks again for responding to my question.

You're welcome, glad I could help some. 9 to 10 migraines a month while on Topomax is excessive. I would check into that. The Co-Q-10 really helps me. The worst migraines I get now come from stress and last three days. Sometimes I get it during my menstrual cycle too now that I am approaching 40 my hormones seem out of wack. I am allergic to Imitrex and most triptans. Good luck!
