Just a couple of notes.

Our thyroid glands need Potassium Iodide for proper functioning, and most of us don't get enough of it in our regular diet, which is why doctors often recommend use of Iodized salt. Iodide is used at certain levels to treat hyperthyroidism.

Potassium Iodide is also used, in pill form, to treat exposure to radioactivity, under specific circumstances. Taken when needed, it protects against radiation sickness. If taken unnecessarily over a period of time, however, it can actually poison you and shut down your thyroid function.

Potassium Iodide is only one derivative form of the element Iodine. Other uses of the element Iodine include as an antiseptic (tincture of iodine), as a co-catalyst in the production of acetic acid, as a component in the production of lifestock feed, and for water treatment.
