I was diagnosed with a mild CM and SM in Feb of this year. I live in Georgia and I can't find any support groups or physicians that specialize in CM & SM. I am having a follow up MRI in 3 months to see if it is progressing. I have been experiencing breathing differences lately as well... could be the CM & SM or anxiety. I will know more after my next MRI. If any of you have information regarding support in GA or close by I would appreciate it. I am just starting on my journey with this disorder. I know i will need to travel if it requires surgery, but I would love to find a Dr. fairly close if possible. I will be attending the conference in July. Has anyone gone before? Was it helpful/informative? Thanks for your response.

Hi Tracy and Welcome!

Sorry to hear you've been dx'd with CM/SM. I don't have any input regarding specialists, I wanted to let you know if you type "ASAP conference" in the search box above (top right corner), you'll get tons of feedback. From all the posts I've read on the conference, many have enjoyed it and commented on how informative they are.

I wish you the best in finding a specialist, and I hope you enjoy the conference.

Take care,
GOD Bless!
Janice

I have not posted in a while. I live in Atlanta and had a successful decompression surgery back in January of 2008. Dr. Stephen Wray did my surgery and I'd recommend him to anyone with a similar problem. He works out of Piedmont hospital and he took Kaiser Permanent insurance when I saw him. My headaches have been fixed and he is a good doctor. What city in Georgia are you in?

Thanks for posting Pam and Pearson...hard for me to get back on the interenet at times--little ones running around. I am in Augusta an d I actually used to live in Atlanta. I would love to know the group he is with. I have a feeling I will need to consult someone else in the future. My syptoms seem to be getting a little worse. Any information you can provide on him would be greatly appreciated. I'll also contact Pam.

thanks again,

Tracy

Atlanta Brain and Spine - Dr. Wray

He was a second NS after the first one told me not to worry about my Chiari and SM.

He is originally from Augusta too. Good Luck if your insurance allows you a consult with him is something I recommend. He's not gonna recommend surgery unless it will help you imho.

Thanks so much for passing on his information. He will be next on my list. I have a feeling my Augusta Dr. may say the same thing your first one did. Thanks for the good wishes. Hope yours stays better. It gives me hope!!

A second or Third opinion on something as serious as surgery is always a good idea. You don't want someone telling you that your fine when your not. You also don't want someone telling you to get surgery if it won't really help you. Be comfortable with your NS. If your not then you most likely need to find someone who your comfortable with. Good Luck, there are not very many NS's who understand or take Chiari seriously. It does cause headaches and they can be fixed quite often. I still have a small syrinx and obviously I still have Chiari but the flow is restored and the headaches are gone.

I am in Atlanta and Dr. Wray performed a successful decompression surgery on me last May. I really liked him. He is a great doctor and took excelent care of me. I saw several other doctors in Atlant and didn't really feel comfortable until I saw Dr. Wray. He came highly reccomended and I am so happy I chose him to perform my surgery.
