Spinal Anesthesia and SM

Postby drummergrl » Thu Jan 05, 2012 5:27 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm having an outpatient hip surgery done in a couple of weeks and will be having (as far as I know, at this point) regional anesthesia. From what I have been told so far, 2 of those options are an epidural or a spinal. I've already been told an epidural is tricky because I have two rods in my back from a previous spinal fusion. My question is about getting a spinal- is that the same type of issue involving a spinal tap? When I was first diagnosed with CM/SM my neurosurgeon made it very clear that I could NOT have a spinal tap because it would alter the CSF pressure/flow. Would this apply to getting a spinal? Also, I was decompressed 5 years ago, so would that rule still apply?

I'm pretty confused and want to have a little knowledge when I meet with the surgeon next week to discuss my anesthesia options. Is anyone able to explain this?
