Newly Pregnant, seeking info.

Postby Parabella » Tue Jul 03, 2012 1:02 pm

Hi guys! Recently learned we are expecting our first this February, and saw the OB for the first time today.

I am 6 years post op, will be 7 by the time baby comes.
I have syrinx remaining, VP shunt and some residual issues that never resolved after decompression.

I am concerned, as is my OB, about how this will affect my ability to birth. She wants to speak to a knowledgable DR who may be able to tell her whether waterbirth is an option for me. The neuro I see here in Atlanta really doesnt understand Chiari and I have only seen him once.. We dont have an established history.. Im not terribly sure who I should refer her to.
Anyone have a jumping off point?

I had decompression surgery in 2011 with Dr. Wray at Atlanta Brain and Spine. We really liked him, he has done a lot of work with Chiari and SM. Best of luck!!

Congrats!!! I was decompressed three years ago and my youngest just turned one a week ago. I also have a syringopleural shunt. In discussion with my ns and the anesthesiologist we decided the safest option for me would be to have a c section. I was able to have a spinal instead of a general which was nice. Optimally I would have gone with a natural delivery but since I had a previous section and my other issues this is what we decided. I wish you a happy/healthy 9 months. Very exciting!

That's exciting and scary! Get in contact with a good CM doc. I'm assuming you had a CM decompression? Maybe Dr Barth Green in FLA, who is an SM specialist, would be good to have in contact with your attending doc, or find someone else who is a specialist? C-section does sound like a necessity, as you don't want to increase your pressure on your CSF if you can avoid it.

I wanted to also say I love your signature quote! Its been decades since I've seen anyone mention Cynthia Heime, but she is such a HOOT! I loved her book 'Sex Tips for Girls' (which is mainly about how to survive as a gal and keeping a sense of humor about it all). Read it in my 20s....maybe time to read it again. Its a cheerer-upper, for sure.
