MRI question

Postby kbaesel » Thu Aug 27, 2009 9:40 pm

My daughter went back for her 6 months MRI and I thought that I was told that it was suppose to be with and without contrast. I just fond out that it was only done without. I don't know if the radiologist made a mistake and forgot to do the contrast or if the Dr told me wrong. What is normally done for the follow up MRI's?

Hi kbaesal!
Once a syrinx has been discovered, a total spine MRI with and without contrast is usually done to get a clearer picture and rule out a tumor. After this has been done, the other MRI's are usually without contrast to monitor the syrinx.

I agree, only my son ended up needing contrast and only because they spotted his syrinx. After that first MRI, he hasn't had to have contrast again for any of his follow up scans.
