Ped NS Versus Regular NS

Postby sydney'smom » Mon Jul 19, 2010 4:07 pm

My dd who is 10 will more likely be having surgery sometime in the next couple of months. She was dx in January with 19mm Chiari and has now developed a syrnix. My question is if it makes a difference whether we go with Dr. Frim (Peds) or Dr Di (Peds and Adults) for the surgery? We have seen Dr. Di and he has recommended surgery and just today Dr. Frim agreed to see her as well (2nd opinion). Any thoughts you have on this would be greatly appreciated.
9 yr old daughter with 19mm CM and 1mm Syrinx.
See Dr. Di at Cleveland Clinic and am scheduling a 2nd opinion with Dr. Frim in Chicago.

We decided to go with a ped NS in a ped hospital because they are dedicated to children and their needs. We are very happy with our choice. Our NS and the entire hospital staff were awesome! They really took care of our entire family, not just our daughter. They were well equiped to handle children and family situations. Just our thoughts. I wish you well and keep us posted on Sydney's progress.

We chose a peds NS since children are not little adults and we wanted someone who had continually operated on children. We also wanted a peds hospital as they are geared towards children. We are Frim patients (have been since 1/2003) and we have never regretted our decision. But the most important thing is that you find a surgeon that you are the most comfortable with, that has the most experience and the one that will answer your questions.

Good Luck-

I'm really glad we had a peds nsg. at a children's hospital. Everything was done 'kid friendly' in getting them ready for surgery, including silly medicine so they were relaxed going back. They had child life specialists who helped when the kids were on days 2 + after surgery that helped to make them want to try to get up and active again as soon as it was safe to. The menu of foods for them to order were very kid friendly, our children's hospital had a tv/dvr in each room, so they put movies in for them to watch.
