TRUE SYRINX?

Postby tony_d987654 » Sat Jul 21, 2007 6:45 pm

I had an MRI last year and was diagnosed with a small cervical syrinx less than 2mm. I just got another MRI and was told there is no "true" syrinx, only 'trace high signal' in the central canal. Anyway I suffer from severe neck and shoulder pain on both sides, and moderate numbness, stiffness in arms.

I'm really confused right now, does anyone have a similiar diagnoses?

Some doctors prefer to call this "fluid in your central canal" other then a syrinx. Less then 2mm is not very large, but I believe, along with many SM specialists that this can cause many different symptoms. You might get more comments if you posted over in the main part of the forum.

dilated central canal

A very small centrally located dilation of the central canal is often not believed to be a syrinx. The central canal of the spinal cord is a normal opening that is sometimes visible with high quality imaging. There are no pain centers in the direct center of the spinal cord. When doctors say that some small syrinxes can cause pain, they are referring to ones that are located on the side of the spinal cord where different nerve receptors reside.

I would ask your doctor to pursue further diagnostics including discograms to look for possible disc problems that might have been missed on the MRI. Also, do you have osteoarthritis or any abnormality in the brain? Do you have a Chiari Malformation?
