Chiari neuro surgeons in Chicago?

Postby emmacos » Sun Apr 08, 2012 12:12 pm

Hi All,

Just wanted to ask if anyone can give me a name or names or a good Neuro Surgeon in Chicago who specialises in cm/sm.

We live in England, and my 20 yr old daughter Helen has started to suffer with worsening symptoms, especially bad debilitating daily headaches, and we don't seem to be getting very far with the neurologists/neuro surgeons here! They just put the headaches down to stress/tension headaches and migraine, and I'm pretty sure that's not what they are!! She was told this before she was diagnosed!

I dont feel there is the understanding and expertise her in England as there is in the US, and would like to send over her scans for the opinion of an experienced chiari neuro surgeon there. Helen's half brother lives in Chicago, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a good NS in that area possibly? I remember there was a Dr Frim there, but I'm not sure if he is still there, or if he just deals with paediatrics?

Wondered if anyone could steer me in the right direction possibly?

Thanks.

hi
I think JSwack went to him - you might want to PM her. I had a very good consultation with Dr Iskandar in Madison Wisconsin, which isn't hugely far. He does pediatrics and adult. (Jswack actually lives in Madison -I cant remember why she went to the Chicago doc instead but it would be worth asking).

Hi Ros

Thanks for those names. Is Dr Frim not about now? I remember he was mentioned quite a bit on here at one time.

Helen is back in hospital - all her old symptoms of balance and dizziness and painful headache are back - I really don't know what is happening, but she is not well at all, and I'm worried sick! She had an mri about a month ago and her neuro surgeon said all was fine, but how can it be?! Unless all this can happen with no changes, I don't know! All I know is that if they don't come up with any reasons for it, and she doesn't improve I'll have to get her second and third opinions! It's like being back to square one all over again!!!!Horrible!

you know Emma it could be something entirely different and not Chiari related . But I do hope they get to the bottom of it real soon. Praying

Thanks Roz.... Me too!

I have yet again emailed the chiari Institute, who say the pseudomeningocele is causing the problems, and that it needs fixing!

No one here seems to agree with that though!

I have heard Dr Oro is a good NS - where is he based, do you know? Im going to get her mri scans next wk and get some further opinions.

I went to Chicago because Dr. I. in Madison didn't want to do it. But I respect him and I've seen him since a number of times. He also did some of my surgery followup. He's an excellent neurosurgeon.

Reedy--when were you in Madison? IF you come back, let me know! I hope at least you got to see something while you were here (lakes, protests....)

Hi jswack! I'm delighted to see you back on the board and also your mention that you are busy busy busy with work...that means you recovered from your fierce surgery a year ago? I'm slated for something similar coming up - on Monday! Yipes! I'm a bit skeert, to be honest. I know your recovery was not easy.

I haven't been to Madison since the short swing through in August of 2010 when I saw Iskandar. What a great town.

That was right about the time when I had the anterior fusion. Laminoplasty is awful to get over and I'm still in pain, but it did improve neurological function. So you were too early for the protests. I wish we hadn't needed them!
