difference between ICP monitoring and lumbar puncture..

Postby emmacos » Tue Apr 24, 2012 10:32 am

Hi All,

Well, Ive got two opinions on Helen's condition from two different neuro surgeons - one says she may have low pressure and is planning to do intracranial pressure monitoring later this week. The other NS, from just looking at her mri scans feels she may have moderately high pressure and says he would do a lumbar puncture, as this may help.

What's the difference between the two? And how can two NS's have such differing opinions on whether she has high or low pressure?

Helen only gets relief from her head pain by lying down. I thought this indicated low pressure, and that with high pressure it would be the other way round, and she would get the headaches lying down, and they would be better when she sat up???

This is all sooooo confusing!

ICP monitoring takes a measurement continuously for 24 hours. The tap just is a "moment" measurement. ICP is used to get a better picture of overall pressures.
Once you choose hope, anything's possible.
