Project Title: Outcomes in
Patients Undergoing Surgical Intervention for Chiari Type I
Malformation with Syringomyelia
Dates: 2007-2008
Grant Amount: $210,000
($105,000 per year)
Purpose of the study: The aim
of this study is to collect pilot data and establish study protocols
for developing a larger- national multicenter study to evaluate
surgical approaches and outcomes in surgery for patients with Chiari
type I malformation and syringomyelia. This study will recruit subjects
with documented Chiari type I malformation and syringomyelia who
present for evaluation of their condition. From eligible subjects, the
study will collect data on the characteristics of subjects who
ultimately undergo surgical intervention. From those subjects who have
surgery, characteristics which predict favorable surgical outcome will
be tracked. This study will collect pre-surgical and post-surgical
data, and it will itself involve no intervention other than data
collection.
The main proponent of this study was the result
of a survey of Chiari I malformation patient members of the American
Syringomyelia Alliance Project who desired a more informed information
base to make decisions for surgery.
