Chiari Expert???

Postby mommyof4 » Thu Feb 17, 2011 12:47 pm

I have seen a lot of people say that you need to make sure the Pediatric Neurosurgeon is a Chiari/SM expert. How do yo know this? I am trying to decide between two surgeons here in Detroit (Dr. Sood & Dr. Maher). I just want to make sure I make the right choice to avoid complications. Thanks for any information you can give.

Ask them first, and then check credentials. There are state websites that give you that information. I am new to this conditon also, my 12 yr old daughter diagnoised 10/10, and I find this site has many helpful posts and links to almost anything you need to know.

Ask both NS how many Cm surgeries they have performed. Make sure they have ALOT of experience. Ask for outcome percentages. Research them on-line. Talk to other families who have used them. Ask exactly what type of decompression they are going to perform and why. Make sure you they answer all your questions. Good luck, let us know how things turn out.

A friend of mine (whom is also a member here) uses Dr. Steven Ham at Children's. Three of her seven have had decompression surgeries with him, and now her seventh child has been diagnosed with Chiari.

I don't know if he is considered a Chiari/SM specialist, but she has felt he was the best (in Michigan) for her family.

Here is his page:
