This hotel boasts an excellent location right in downtown Iowa City, surrounded by restaurants, bars, businesses, and shops. Just step outside, and you’ll find yourself in the pedestrian district where no cars are allowed. There’s also a small playground right outside the hotel.
The hotel features a unique and quirky theme that offers plenty to see and enjoy. Its bold black and yellow exterior makes a striking statement. Inside, you’ll find multiple glass cases surrounding a square of lobby couches filled with books, with spine facing in reminding you not to judge a book by its cover. The lobby pays homage to the City of Literature, adorned with large poetry excerpts scrawled on the walls. One standout feature is a wall made of 170,000 #2 pencils. The key cards are replicas of famous individuals who attended the university, such as B.J. Armstrong and Gene Wilder.
The late Gene Wilder is integral to the hotel’s theme. You’ll also notice interesting wallpaper strips lining the hallways, with images of goldfinches fluttering in the bathrooms. Artwork depicting the emerging baseball players from the movie “Field of Dreams” and images of Nile Kinnick’s Heisman Trophy add to the unique experience. This is just a glimpse of the quirky adventure that awaits you!
