ASAP 2025 Conference Host: Dr Brian J Dlouhy

ASAP 2025 Conference Host: Brian J Dlouhy, MD

ASAP is pleased to introduce Dr. Brian J. Dlouhy as the esteemed host of our 2025 conference in Iowa City, July 21-24, 2025. Dr. Dlouhy brings us to the heartland of the USA, where diverse perspectives can unite to bridge neuroscience and patient care to advance research, treatment and hope for Chiari malformation, syringomyelia and related disorders.

Dr. Dlouhy is a pediatric and adult neurosurgeon at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. He is also an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics at the University of Iowa. ASAP is honored to have Dr. Dlouhy as a member of the ASAP Medical Advisory Board and the newest Chair of the ASAP Research Committee.

Dr. Dlouhy treats all neurosurgical disorders but specializes in the treatment of Chiari malformations, syringomyelia, and disorders of the craniovertebral junction in patients of all ages, from infants to adults. This has led to numerous manuscripts published in peer-review journals and book chapters on these topics.

Dr. Dlouhy graduated from New York University School of Medicine in 2007. He completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Iowa working extensively under Dr. Arnold Menezes. His postdoctoral fellowships include surgical neurology, minimally invasive neurosurgery, neurosurgery and pediatric neurosurgery. Dr. Dlouhy now works side by side with Dr. Arnold Menezes treating all disorders of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) in children and adults. Dr. Matthew Howard, Professor and Chair of the UI Department of Neurosurgery says, “Dr. Dlouhy and Dr. Greenlee are part of the next generation and carrying on this tradition of excellence that Dr. Menezes started.”

“I am honored to host the American Syringomyelia & Chiari Alliance Project (ASAP) annual conference here in Iowa City, Iowa,” says Dr. Brian Dlouhy.

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Dlouhy leads a human brain research lab to better understand Chiari malformations and cerebellar/brainstem function. A goal of his research is to better understand the causes and pathophysiology of Chiari malformations and determine better treatment strategies.

“I am honored to host the American Syringomyelia & Chiari Alliance Project (ASAP) annual conference here in Iowa City, Iowa,” says Dr. Brian Dlouhy. “As a neurosurgeon with a specialized focus on Chiari and complex craniovertebral junction abnormalities, I am eager to bring together leading experts and patients to advance research and improve outcomes. The conference will be an excellent opportunity to engage with a community that is deeply committed to raising awareness and fostering innovation in the treatment of these conditions. By bringing this event to Iowa City, we aim to highlight the latest advancements and foster collaborations that will continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in neurosurgery and patient care.”
